Summer Sunshine

Tips

With weather forecasts predicting an upcoming period of warmer, sunnier weather, it's always useful to provide a few simple tips to ensure maximum comfort and safety.

Open windows when it's cooler in the morning or evening, and close curtains or blinds on windows in direct sunlight to help keep rooms comfortable and prevent any unwanted glare.

Remember, keeping your home well ventilated in general is also a great way to combat the risks of damp, mould or condensation.

Fans can help keep you cool, but always place them on a stable surface, keep them away from water and switch them off before leaving home. Check plugs and cables for signs of wear or damage.

This tip isn't just relevant in summer, but it's important that bikes, prams, scooters and other belongings are not left in communal hallways or stairwells.  Keeping escape routes clear helps everyone stay safe, and limits the risk of potentially flammable materials from being in these 'sterile' zones.

Some residents may spend more time outside or in shared backcourt areas when the weather allows. Please report any loose paving, damaged fencing or other hazards that could cause trips or falls.

We would also like to again highlight the importance of keeping these areas as tidy as possible in order to mitigate against the risk of attracting pests such as mice. You can find more helpful tips on this subject here.

It's always kind to check in on older or more vulnerable neighbours who might struggle more in warmer weather.

You can also let us know if you are especially concerned about their wellbeing.

Lock all windows and doors and turn off electrical appliances that don't need to stay on. If you know your neighbours well enough, it can be a good idea to ask them or someone else that you trust to keep an eye on your home.

It can also be wise to avoid advertising that you're on holiday on social media etc. until you return.

Remember that if you become aware of an emergency repair required in your home when you're away, you can still contact our Association or out-of-hours contractor on 01698 743612.

Run taps and showers for a few minutes before using them again once you return. This helps against the risk of using any stagnant water that may have been sitting in pipework when you were away.

This advice applies year round, and we like to take any opportunity to remind residents of the importance of testing their smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms on a regular (ideally weekly) basis.

If you suspect or find any faults during your tests, or if you struggle to do it yourself, please contact our office promptly so that we can assist.
